Teenage sprinting sensation Quincy Wilson is poised to make history as the youngest ever US male track Olympian. The 16-year-old has reportedly been selected for the 4×400 meter relay team for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
Wilson shared the exciting news on his Instagram on Sunday, posting: “WE GOING TO THE OLYMPICS,” alongside multiple posts celebrating his selection. His coach, Joe Lee, also confirmed the development to major outlets including the Washington Post and USA Today. “The call came directly to me from USA Track & Field,” Lee told USA Today. “I called Quincy afterwards with the good news.”
However, USA Track & Field has refrained from officially confirming Wilson’s selection, stating that the full team roster, including the relay pool, will be announced on July 8.
Wilson’s inclusion follows an outstanding performance at the US Olympic Trials, where he made a remarkable debut by twice breaking the under-18 world record in the 400m. Although he did not qualify for the 400m event itself, finishing sixth in the final, Wilson set a new under-18 world record with a time of 44.59 seconds in the semifinals. This came just two days after he initially broke the record with a time of 44.66 seconds.
Reflecting on his performance after the 400m race, Wilson expressed uncertainty about the season’s end, humorously adding, “I don’t know if my season is over yet, I don’t want to go eat ice cream too soon.” His doubt turned into joy upon discovering his relay team inclusion.
Born in 2008, Wilson has rapidly ascended in the track and field world, consistently breaking records and establishing himself as a formidable athlete. Now, with an Olympic debut on the horizon, Wilson is set to showcase his talent on the global stage, underscoring his potential as one of the sport’s brightest rising stars.
