Politician Injured, Wife Killed in Sint Maarten Shooting

by | Jul 18, 2024

On the evening of Wednesday, July 17, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred in the Cupecoy/Maho area of Sint Maarten, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) responded to a distress call at approximately 9:30 pm, discovering multiple victims at the scene.

The primary victim, identified as Mr. Olivier Arrindell, a prominent politician and leader of the Oualichi Movement for Change (OMC), sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds. Arrindell’s wife, Sabine, was also in the vehicle and tragically succumbed to her injuries despite prompt medical attention. A minor, identified as their daughter, was present but unharmed physically. A third individual, Laurence Lake, an OMC candidate, was also shot but survived.

Arrindell, covered in blood, managed to drive to the nearby Sonesta Maho Resort seeking refuge. Despite his efforts, his wife died at the scene. Arrindell, visibly distressed, was captured on video saying, “They tried to kill me. This is serious,” and pointing towards his deceased wife in the car.

KPSM detectives and forensic teams quickly secured the area to gather evidence and initiate a thorough investigation. The Cupecoy/Maho area was temporarily closed to facilitate a comprehensive examination of the crime scene. The police, along with the Prosecutor’s Office (OM SXM), have urged the public to come forward with any information that might assist in solving this case, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Sint Maarten. Arrindell, known for his vocal opposition to former Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs, frequently accused her of corruption. In a live video from an ambulance, Arrindell claimed the attack was politically motivated, implicating leaders from other political parties.

The response from political figures was swift. National Alliance (NA) leader Silveria Jacobs condemned the violence, stating, “Politically motivated violence of any kind has absolutely no place in our sweet St. Maarten. This is not who we are.” Democratic Party (DP) leader Sarah Wescot-Williams and Party for Progress (PFP) leader Melissa Gumbs also denounced the attack, calling for peace and unity. United People’s (UP) party leader Omar Ottley emphasized the community’s need to stand against gun violence, while Soualiga Action Movement (SAM) leader Franklin Meyers canceled his party’s public meeting, expressing condolences to Arrindell and his family.

Minister of Justice Lyndon C.J. Lewis issued a statement condemning the act of violence and expressing condolences to the affected families. He emphasized the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation and to holding those responsible accountable. “We stand with you in mourning and extend our heartfelt sympathy during this incredibly difficult time,” said Lewis. He also highlighted the need for unity and adherence to the core values of peace and democratic engagement in Sint Maarten.

Caretaker Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina addressed the nation, extending his condolences and stressing that violence has no place in Sint Maarten. He assured the public that official reports were forthcoming and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and democracy.

As the investigation continues, the Sint Maarten community remains in shock. The authorities are working diligently to uncover the motives behind this heinous act and to bring the perpetrators to justice. The incident has underscored the fragility of peace and the urgent need for solidarity and non-violence in the island’s political sphere.
