Paula Radcliffe Apologizes for Comments on Convicted Rapist Competing at Olympics

by | Jul 25, 2024

Former marathon world champion Paula Radcliffe has issued an apology after wishing a convicted rapist “the best of luck” as he competes in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Radcliffe’s comments referred to Steven van de Velde, a member of the Netherlands beach volleyball team, who was convicted in 2016 for raping a 12-year-old British girl.

Van de Velde, who committed the crime at the age of 19 after meeting his victim on Facebook, was sentenced to four years in prison but served only 12 months. Following his release, he resumed his volleyball career and was selected for the Dutch Olympic team in June.

Radcliffe’s remarks came during an interview with radio station LBC, where she said, “I know that he is married now and has settled down. I think it’s a tough thing to do to punish him twice and if he’s managed to successfully turn his life around after being sent to prison, and to qualify and to be playing sport at the highest level, then I actually wish him the best of luck.” Her comments sparked immediate backlash.

In a series of posts on social media, Radcliffe expressed regret for her comments and clarified her stance. “I am mortified that I expressed it so badly and didn’t condemn the rape out loud,” she wrote. She emphasized her belief in second chances but acknowledged that the Olympics should be reserved for those who uphold its ideals.

“I do believe in second chances after serving punishment but think the Olympics should be for those who uphold the ideals – that’s why I poorly brought the doping comparison in,” Radcliffe added. “I myself am shocked and disappointed at how I expressed this so badly.”

Radcliffe further apologized, stating, “I profoundly apologize and am deeply shocked and disappointed in myself and can’t understand how I managed to convey it so badly.” She reiterated that her intention was never to overlook the severity of the crime and that she should have articulated her views more clearly.

This incident has highlighted the sensitive nature of discussing athletes with criminal pasts and the importance of carefully considering the impact of such statements. Radcliffe’s apology underscores the need for public figures to communicate their views with greater clarity and sensitivity.
