Bubba Wallace Fined $50,000 for Post-Race Incident at Chicago Street Course

by | Jul 12, 2024

NASCAR officials have fined Bubba Wallace $50,000 for an on-track infraction that occurred after the checkered flag at the recent NASCAR Cup Series race at the Chicago Street Course. The penalty was issued for violating Sections 4.4.B & D of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct during Sunday’s Grant Park 165.

The incident took place during the cool-down lap after the race concluded. Wallace, driving the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota, intentionally collided with the No. 48 Chevrolet of race winner Alex Bowman. This act of frustration followed a Lap 25 altercation in which Bowman’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevy tangled with Wallace’s car, causing Wallace to clip the side and spin into the wall. Wallace ultimately finished the race in 13th place and currently holds the 17th position in the playoff standings, trailing by 45 points from the elimination line for the 16-driver playoff field.

This penalty highlights the escalating tensions and competitive nature of the NASCAR Cup Series as drivers vie for playoff positions. Wallace’s frustration is understandable given the stakes, but NASCAR officials emphasize the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and safety on the track.

The Cup Series will continue its regular season this Sunday at Pocono Raceway. The race is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on USA Network, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, and the NBC Sports App. As the season progresses, drivers like Wallace will need to balance their competitive drive with adherence to NASCAR’s conduct regulations to avoid further penalties and secure their playoff aspirations.

The incident at the Chicago Street Course serves as a reminder of the intense pressure drivers face as they approach the critical stages of the season. Fans and teams alike will be watching closely as the series moves to Pocono, eager to see how the drama and competition unfold.
