Arike Ogunbowale Shines in WNBA All-Star Game, Clark and Reese Impress

by | Jul 22, 2024

In a stunning display of talent, Arike Ogunbowale led Team WNBA to a 117-109 victory over Team USA at the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. The game, reminiscent of the 2021 All-Star showdown, saw Ogunbowale score a record-breaking 34 points, earning her second MVP award. Breanna Stewart, reflecting on the victory, described it as a “déjà vu feeling.” The All-Star weekend was historic, featuring Allisha Gray’s double win in the skills challenge and 3-point contest, Stewart’s 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Angel Reese’s milestone as the first rookie to record a double-double in an All-Star Game.

Despite being newcomers, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese made significant contributions to Team USA. Clark, known for her playmaking, recorded 10 assists, falling just one shy of Sue Bird’s all-time All-Star Game record. Reese, continuing her impressive season, finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, marking her as the first rookie to achieve a double-double in the event. A memorable moment came when Clark assisted Reese for a layup in the third quarter, showcasing their synergy and hinting at future collaborations in both All-Star and international competitions.

Ogunbowale’s performance was a highlight of the game. After a scoreless first half, she exploded with 34 points in the second half, including a record 21 points in the third quarter alone. Her scoring spree featured six field goals, five 3-pointers, and four free throws, turning the game in Team WNBA’s favor. Ogunbowale’s remarkable turnaround was sparked by Team WNBA coach Cheryl Miller’s halftime challenge, motivating her to take control of the game and lead her team to victory.

The weekend was filled with historic achievements. Allisha Gray’s dual victories on Friday set a high bar, while Stewart’s and Reese’s performances added to the record-breaking atmosphere. Stewart became the first player in All-Star history to score 30 points and grab 10 rebounds, and Reese’s double-double cemented her status as a rising star. These accomplishments underscored the depth of talent in the WNBA and highlighted the league’s bright future.

As the WNBA enters a break for the Olympics, fans are left with memorable moments from the All-Star Game. The return of regular-season play in August will see teams, including those of Clark and Reese, competing for playoff positions. The All-Star weekend not only celebrated the league’s current stars but also provided a glimpse into its promising future, with players like Ogunbowale, Clark, and Reese leading the charge.
