Sport INT: Ryan Garcia Suspended for One Year Following Positive PED Test

by | Jun 21, 2024 | 0 comments

Boxing star Ryan Garcia has been suspended for one year after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine. The New York State Athletic Commission announced the suspension, which is retroactive to Garcia’s April 20 victory over Devin Haney. This victory has now been overturned to a no-contest.

Garcia, 25, also forfeited his $1.2 million purse and was fined $10,000. Despite his higher overall earnings, the disclosed purse is what he will lose. The suspension will end on April 20, 2025, provided Garcia passes future drug tests.

Devin Haney, who faced Garcia in the contested bout, expressed relief over the ruling. “The facts are the facts, and I wasn’t on an even playing field,” Haney told ESPN. “I’m happy I was able to receive justice. This experience will only make me stronger.”

Haney’s attorney, Pat English, acknowledged the severity of Garcia’s punishment, noting it as unprecedented. Haney, who had never been knocked down in his previous 31 professional fights, was floored multiple times by Garcia, who was later found to have gained an unfair advantage.

The New York State Athletic Commission emphasized their commitment to maintaining the sport’s integrity. “The commission will continue to hold athletes to the highest professional standards,” they stated.

Garcia’s team maintains his innocence, asserting that he never intentionally took a banned substance. “Ryan, with his legal team, has resolved this issue and firmly maintains his truth: he never intentionally took any banned substance,” Team Garcia stated.

Garcia’s suspension adds to his career setbacks, including a 15-month layoff for mental health issues and hand surgery. His last official win was in December against Oscar Duarte, following his only career defeat to Gervonta Davis in April 2023.

Ostarine, which Garcia tested positive for, is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and is known for promoting muscle growth, fat loss, stamina, and recovery. Previous boxers like Lucian Bute and Amir Khan have also faced penalties for using the substance.

Despite the controversy, Garcia’s team remains optimistic, believing fans will remember his performance against Haney as a masterclass, even as his suspension serves as a reminder of strict anti-doping regulations in sports.
