Russia Blames U.S. for Deadly Ukrainian Missile Attack on Crimea

by | Jun 25, 2024

Russia has accused the United States of responsibility for a Ukrainian missile attack on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula that resulted in the deaths of four people, including two children, and injuries to 151 others. The attack, which utilized U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles, occurred on Sunday.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, four of the five ATACMS missiles, equipped with cluster warheads, were intercepted by air defense systems, while the ammunition of the fifth detonated mid-air. Footage broadcasted on Russian state television showed people fleeing a beach, with some being carried away on sun loungers. The missile fragments landed near a beach on the north side of Sevastopol, where locals were on holiday.

The Defence Ministry claimed that U.S. specialists had set the flight coordinates for the missiles based on information from U.S. spy satellites, making Washington directly accountable for the attack. “Responsibility for the deliberate missile attack on the civilians of Sevastopol is borne above all by Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, and by the Kyiv regime, from whose territory this strike was carried out,” the ministry stated.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, viewing it as part of its territory, although the international community still considers it Ukrainian land. The United States began providing Ukraine with longer-range ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 kilometers (186 miles), earlier this year.

Russian-installed Sevastopol Governor Mihail Razvozhaev reported a death toll of four and 144 injured, including 82 hospitalized. Among the injured were 27 children. Specialist doctors were flown in from other parts of Russia to assist.

The Kremlin stated that President Vladimir Putin had been in constant contact with the military since the attack. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, condemned the incident as “a vile, despicable act against our people.”

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill also condemned the attack, noting its occurrence on the Orthodox holiday of Trinity. Neither Ukraine nor the United States has commented on the incident.

This attack occurred on the same day Ukraine reported one person killed and 10 wounded by Russian strikes on the eastern city of Kharkiv. Putin has consistently accused the U.S. of using Ukraine to undermine Russian security, a claim denied by Kyiv and its Western allies. He has warned of the growing risks of a direct confrontation between Moscow and the U.S.-led NATO alliance.
