Miss Panama Faces Backlash for Mocking Miss Dominican Republic; Issues Public Apology

by | Jun 4, 2024

Model Mehr Eliezer, Miss Panama, has come under heavy criticism after mocking Clauvid Dály, the recently crowned Miss Universe Dominican Republic. The incident sparked outrage across Latin America and on social media platforms.

Eliezer posted a comparative image on social media, distorting Dály’s features in a derogatory manner. The post was deleted within half an hour, but not before it was widely seen and criticized. In response to the backlash, Eliezer issued a public apology to Dály, the Dominican people, and the Miss Universe Dominican Republic organization, attributing the incident to a misunderstanding.

Despite her apology, the damage was done. Many Panamanians expressed their disapproval, calling for Eliezer to resign. Critics highlighted the unethical nature of her comments and noted that her actions did not represent the values of Panama. There were also remarks regarding her Indian origin, with some suggesting that her background made her less representative of the Panamanian populace.

One Panamanian Instagram user wrote, “I am Panamanian. It’s a pity considering how close our countries are. This woman does not represent us; she is of Indian descent and did not deserve to win. The jury seemed impressed by her linguistic skills, but her recent actions have thrown away the opportunity to be Miss Panama. Apologies to the Dominican Republic on behalf of this contestant and Panama.”

Clauvid Dály, an 18-year-old model, has yet to comment on the incident. Her recent victory in the Miss Universe Dominican Republic pageant continues to draw attention both domestically and internationally. This controversy has only intensified the spotlight on her triumph.

The incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny faced by public figures and the rapid consequences of social media actions. As the pageant community and fans await further developments, the focus remains on fostering respect and understanding among contestants and nations.
