Actor Bernard Hill, whose powerful performances graced both epic fantasy and historical drama, has died at the age of 79. Hill’s agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his passing on Sunday, May 5th.

Hill’s career achieved international acclaim with his portrayal of King Theoden of Rohan in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Theoden’s transformation from a weary king to a courageous leader resonated with audiences worldwide. Hill’s commanding presence was also on display in James Cameron’s blockbuster “Titanic,” where he played Captain Edward Smith, the doomed captain of the ill-fated ship.

The sad news of Bernard Hill’s death comes as a video emerged of him telling his fans at Scotland’s Comic Con to ‘keep going’

However, Hill’s talents extended far beyond Hollywood. He was a mainstay of British television, earning recognition for his portrayal of the troubled Yosser Hughes in the acclaimed miniseries “Boys from the Blackstuff.” More recently, he garnered praise for his role as the Duke of Norfolk in the BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s “Wolf Hall.”

Bernard Hill’s passing leaves a void in the acting world. He will be remembered for his versatility, his gravitas, and the depth he brought to every character he played. A statement from his family is expected soon.
