UAE Braces for More Disruptions as Rain Returns After Deadly Floods

by | May 2, 2024

Dubai, UAE – May 2, 2024 – Just weeks after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) caused deadly floods, the country is facing fresh disruptions as heavy rain lashed parts of the nation again today.

The storm resulted in significant travel and work obstacles:

  • Flights Grounded: Dubai International Airport, the second-busiest for international traffic, experienced multiple flight cancellations and diversions due to the downpour.
  • Schools and Offices Closed: Authorities prioritized safety by ordering a two-day closure of schools and offices in affected areas. Residents were encouraged to work and study remotely.
  • Precautionary Measures: To mitigate flooding risks, roads susceptible to overflows were shut down. Residents were also advised to avoid mountainous areas, deserts, and bodies of water.

This recent bout of rain follows the devastating April floods that claimed at least four lives in the UAE. The record-breaking rainfall submerged major highways and even halted operations at Dubai International Airport. Scientists have linked these extreme weather events to climate change, raising concerns about their increasing frequency and intensity.

While residents appeared better prepared this time, with storm drains being cleared and emergency warnings issued, the UAE is assessing potential damage and working to ensure public safety throughout the weather event.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert
