Jutta Leerdam Withdraws from Team IKO Contract at Last Moment.

by | May 11, 2024

In a surprising turn of events, Jutta Leerdam has decided to withdraw from signing a contract with Team IKO at the eleventh hour. The Dutch speed skater from ‘s-Gravezande had been in advanced negotiations with the team led by the Ten Hove brothers but has now announced her decision to step back via Instagram.

Leerdam expressed her uncertainty over the past two months, deliberating extensively on her options and attempting to fit into certain structures. Despite being on the verge of making a decision this week, she found herself torn between different paths within the skating world. Ultimately, Leerdam couldn’t let go of the idea of pursuing an individual route with people she believes in.

Contrary to media reports suggesting her imminent move to Team IKO, Leerdam clarified that while they were close to finalizing the deal, she realized that it was taking more from her than what she was gaining in return. She thanked all the teams she had spoken with for their efforts to accommodate her needs.

Leerdam emphasized that pursuing an individual route in sports is not always easy, often accompanied by stress and loneliness. However, she is willing to embrace the challenges for the potential rewards. As she puts it, “High risk, high reward.”

In light of her decision, Leerdam will continue her journey solo, believing that this sport-specific route is best for her in the pre-Olympic season. She aims to learn, invest, and return to her roots, pushing herself out of her comfort zone. Regardless of the outcome, she intends to look back on her career with pride, having followed her instincts.

Martin ten Hove, the head of Team IKO, responded to Leerdam’s decision with respect, acknowledging that both parties must feel that the partnership is perfect. While Team IKO had considered Leerdam as a potential addition to their roster, they maintain that their current lineup of twelve athletes is satisfactory.

With Leerdam’s departure from negotiations, Team IKO does not intend to seek out another skater to replace her, confident in their existing roster. Leerdam’s unexpected decision adds a new twist to the skating scene as she continues to navigate her career path independently.
