Fans of Disney’s beloved “Moana” have much to celebrate as the studio has released the first teaser for “Moana 2.” The highly anticipated sequel is slated to hit theaters on November 27, 2024, promising a new epic adventure for Moana, Maui, and an ensemble of new characters.
The sequel takes place three years after Moana’s initial voyage. This time, she receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, compelling her to journey into the far seas of Oceania. Accompanied by Maui and a fresh crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana ventures into dangerous, long-lost waters, facing challenges unlike any she has encountered before (Peoplemag) (The Walt Disney Company).
Auli’i Cravalho returns as the voice of Moana, while Dwayne Johnson is expected to reprise his role as Maui. The film is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., a seasoned Disney storyboard artist with credits including “The Lion King” (2019), “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and the original “Moana.” The music for “Moana 2” will be composed by Grammy-winning duo Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, alongside original composers Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina (Peoplemag) (Motion Picture Association) (WDW Info).
In related news, Disney is also working on a live-action remake of “Moana.” Dwayne Johnson will bring Maui to life in this adaptation, but Auli’i Cravalho will not reprise her role as Moana. Instead, she will serve as an executive producer, actively participating in the casting process for her successor (Peoplemag) (Motion Picture Association).
The original “Moana,” released in 2016, was a global hit, grossing over $680 million worldwide and earning critical acclaim for its animation, music, and storytelling. With “Moana 2,” Disney aims to build on this legacy, offering audiences a thrilling new chapter in Moana’s journey and expanding the beloved franchise further into both animated and live-action realms.
Stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches and additional details about the cast and storyline emerge.
