Caitlin Clark’s Olympic Hopes: A Look at the Odds.

by | May 11, 2024

As the WNBA season gears up, all eyes are on Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever guard who has been making headlines both on and off the court. One burning question remains: Will she secure a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic basketball team?

Clark, a standout talent who was picked No. 1 in the WNBA draft, faces stiff competition in her bid to join the Olympic roster. The selection process for the team is rigorous, with only 12 spots available for the United States, which is aiming for its eighth consecutive gold medal in women’s basketball.

While Clark has represented USA Basketball in the past, she missed the last training camp due to her collegiate commitments. Now, she must rely on her performance in the WNBA to make her case for selection.

The decision on who makes the team lies with a committee chaired by Jennifer Rizzotti, a former UConn and WNBA player. The committee includes esteemed figures such as South Carolina coach Dawn Staley and retired WNBA champions Seimone Augustus and Delisha Milton-Jones.

Clark’s chances of making the team are undoubtedly challenging. She is up against experienced players like Diana Taurasi, who is attempting to make her sixth Olympic appearance. Other seasoned guards vying for spots include Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum, all of whom have Olympic gold medals to their names.

However, Clark’s youth and undeniable talent could work in her favor. At just 22 years old, she would be the youngest player on the team if selected, breaking a longstanding trend of UConn and Tennessee players dominating the youngest Olympian title.

Ultimately, Clark’s fate rests on her performance in the WNBA season, which kicks off with the Fever’s opening game against the Connecticut Sun. As the basketball world watches closely, Clark’s journey to the Olympics serves as a testament to her skill, determination, and the fierce competition within women’s basketball at the highest level.
