Baltimore Bridge Collapse: Shipping Channel to Reopen by End of May.

by | May 11, 2024

The Port of Baltimore’s crucial shipping channel, closed since the collapse of the Key Bridge on March 26th, is expected to reopen by the end of May, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The incident occurred when the MV Dali, a 948ft container ship, struck the bridge, resulting in its closure and the tragic loss of six lives – workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge.

Buttigieg assured that efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and restore normal operations to the port. While the closure has impacted supply chains, shipping companies and transport firms have managed the situation, albeit temporarily. However, Buttigieg emphasized the necessity of restoring the port to its regular functioning.

Initial estimates by the US Army Corps of Engineers suggested a reopening around May 10th, but potential delays due to weather and the complexity of cleanup operations have been acknowledged.

The MV Dali remains lodged under the collapsed bridge, obstructing the primary shipping channel. Plans have been unveiled to use precision cuts and controlled detonations to remove the debris from the ship.

A unified command, comprising various agencies and private firms, is leading the efforts to re-float the Dali and clear the channel. Meanwhile, the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting investigations into the incident.

Amidst these developments, concerns persist over the welfare of the Dali’s crew, primarily Indian nationals, who remain on board. It remains uncertain when they will be able to disembark or resume their voyage.

The Port of Baltimore, a vital hub for various goods including steel, aluminium, and vehicles, serves as a key regional gateway. Last year, it handled over 750,000 vehicles, underlining its significance in the transportation network.
