The New York Yankees continue their strong start to the season by way of a double-header against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday, matching their franchise-best mark in 15 games. After postponing the game due to weather conditions on Saturday, the Yankees came out balanced, securing a 3-2 victory in Game 1 before dominating with an 8-2 victory.
Juan Soto emerged as a key player for the Yankees in the second game, pitching a three-run streak that contributed to the team’s impressive offensive display. Soto, who joined the Yankees in his first season with the team, currently has some impressive hitting statistics with a slash line of.339/.465/.554.
The Yankees’ 12-3 record in 15 games matches their best start in franchise history. Previous seasons in which the Yankees achieved a similar record include 1926, 1943, 1949, 1987, 1988, and 2003. Notably, three of these seasons resulted in World Series championships for the Yankees, highlighting the potential for success with such a strong start.
In addition to their current record, the Yankees also started the season 11-4 on 10 different occasions, winning the World Series in five of those seasons. This is the 17th time in franchise history that the Yankees are at least 11-4 in 15 games, and seven of the previous 16 instances resulted in championship wins.
Among 30 MLB teams, the Yankees’ 12-3 start puts them among only 84 teams in history to have made such a solid start to a season. Last season’s Tampa Bay Rays were the most recent team to start 13-2 through 15 games, while the best start recorded through 15 games was 14-1, achieved five times, most recently by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1987.
Moving forward, the Yankees have one more game in their series against the Guardians before traveling to Toronto for a three-game series against the Blue Jays. With their impressive start to the season, the Yankees are maintaining their momentum as they continue their quest for success in the 2024 MLB season.
