Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has managed to evade an impeachment effort amidst allegations of corruption

by | Apr 4, 2024

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has managed to evade an impeachment effort amidst allegations of corruption linked to her possession of high-value luxury items, including a collection of Rolex watches and other jewelry. The attempts to impeach her were rejected twice by lawmakers, signaling a tumultuous political landscape in Peru.

Boluarte, who ascended to the presidency following the impeachment of her predecessor Pedro Castillo, faced accusations related to the ownership of luxury goods estimated to be worth nearly half a million dollars. The impeachment motions failed to gather enough support in Congress, with the Peruvian Constitution’s provision for impeachment based on “moral incapacity” not finding grounds for her removal.

Peru has seen a revolving door of leadership, witnessing six presidents since 2018. The country’s political instability is exacerbated by the ease with which impeachment proceedings can be initiated without requiring concrete evidence of legal wrongdoing.

The current administration’s tenure has been marred by controversy, stemming from Castillo’s attempt to dissolve Congress, his subsequent impeachment, and Boluarte’s rise to power amidst public protests. The government’s response to dissent has been met with criticism, including allegations of excessive force leading to civilian casualties.

Boluarte’s presidency has been marked by a rapid turnover in her cabinet and ongoing investigations into allegations of illicit enrichment. Investigators have expanded their probe beyond the ownership of luxury items to include scrutiny of bank deposits and other assets of uncertain origins.

Despite her denials of any wrongdoing, Boluarte’s administration faces widespread public disapproval, reflected in dismal approval ratings for both the president and Congress. Calls for accountability persist, with demands for transparency and accountability in the face of mounting allegations.

As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on Boluarte and the future trajectory of Peru’s political landscape amidst ongoing challenges and uncertainties.
