Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Rocks New York City and Surrounding Areas

by | Apr 6, 2024

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled the northeastern United States, with its epicenter near Lebanon, New Jersey, approximately 45 miles west of New York City. The quake was felt along the Atlantic coast from Boston to Philadelphia, potentially affecting up to 45 million people. Despite its significant magnitude, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage.

Authorities in New York City swiftly assessed the situation, urging those in danger to call 911 and report non-emergency impacts through the city’s hotline. Public schools in New York City initiated evaluations of their buildings as a precautionary measure.

The Port Authority temporarily closed the Holland Tunnel for inspection, and some flights to New York City were diverted. Witnesses described the tremor as a “violent rumble,” with shaking lasting approximately 30 seconds. The earthquake disrupted a United Nations speech on the Gaza conflict and was felt as far as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Connecticut.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul reached out to the White House, informing President Joe Biden of the situation. The United States Geological Survey noted that while earthquakes are uncommon along the Atlantic coast, they are not unheard of due to underlying tensions.

This event drew comparisons to a 2011 earthquake that struck the East Coast, registering a magnitude of 5.8 and causing significant disruption, including damage to the Washington Monument and evacuations of government buildings.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of this unexpected seismic event, authorities are emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of natural disasters. While the immediate impact appears minimal, ongoing assessments and response efforts will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
