Judge Expands Gag Order in Trump Hush Money Case Following Attacks on Court Family Members

by | Apr 2, 2024

In a significant development in the ongoing criminal hush money trial involving former President Donald Trump, the presiding judge has widened a recently imposed gag order. This expansion now encompasses not only Trump but also extends to include family members of the court and the Manhattan district attorney.

The decision, handed down late on Monday, comes in the wake of remarks made by Trump targeting the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan in recent days. Concerned about the potential impact of Trump’s rhetoric, the judge warned that such statements could instill fear in those associated with the trial and their loved ones, thus threatening the fair administration of justice.

The judge emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the genuine threat posed by Trump’s verbal attacks and stressing the inadequacy of mere admonitions or self-restraint.

Prior to this ruling, the Manhattan district attorney’s office had petitioned for an extension of the gag order to shield family members of those involved in the case from further attacks by Trump.

Last week, Trump had brazenly flouted a previous gag order by publicly commenting on various aspects of the trial and targeting individuals associated with it. Notably, the initial order did not cover remarks directed at District Attorney Alvin Bragg or the judge and his family.

Trump, invoking his First Amendment rights, argued that his actions were a form of self-defense and legitimate campaign speech. However, prosecutors countered that his recent statements did not constitute political advocacy but instead amounted to baseless smears against the court and its affiliates.

This latest development underscores the critical importance of upholding the integrity of judicial proceedings and safeguarding against any undue influence or interference, particularly in high-profile cases such as this one.
