Installation of Floating Wind Farms between Curaçao and Aruba

by | Apr 10, 2024

In Papiamento, there is a well-known saying that goes: “cacho cu nenga weso, ta weso mes e lo come” which also aligns with the information that surfaced yesterday in the Dutch press regarding green energy.

Yesterday morning in The Hague, during a meeting with the Tweede Kamer commission regarding Kingdom relations, the official in charge of climate and energy affairs, Rob Jetten, confirmed that several Dutch companies, in collaboration with the authorities of Curaçao and Aruba, are set to embark on various interesting projects concerning the use of green energy.

According to the Dutch official, the governments of these three countries, along with TNO and a group of ten Dutch companies specializing in innovative energy, will collaborate to install more than 10 wind turbine plants to be located between the islands of Aruba and Curaçao.

The meeting was attended by the State Secretary for Kingdom Affairs, Alexandra van Huffelen, Minister Rob Jetten responsible for climate and energy, and also Minister Marc Harbers in charge of infrastructure and water management.

Minister Jetten spoke of a significant project and emphasized the importance of obtaining more information through this project about the possibility of constructing such floating parks around the world.

On her part, State Secretary van Huffelen highlighted the importance of the intentions of these two islands to achieve hydrogen gas production, which opens up the possibility for export, even to the Netherlands itself.

According to the official, financing for this project can make use of the necessary funds before January 2025, from a fund of 200 million euros that the Dutch government will make available through the “Nationaal Groeifonds,” which will be accessible for projects in the CAS islands.

It is worth noting that it is the same TNO that the Wever Croes Cabinet decided to boycott, as it was seen as aligned with the vision of the AVP party. Now, we see TNO returning for such a significant and crucial project. A decision that has wasted valuable time in executing the vision of turning Aruba into the country most dependent on green energy in the world.

Undoubtedly, this is very important information that confirms to some extent a political mindset among politicians of these islands that needs to change. Every politician entering a government to lead this country must show maturity and a more ‘normal’ mindset compared to what has been the case in recent years.
