Humanitarian aid agencies withdraw efforts due to Israel’s deadly attacks against Aid Workers

by | Apr 4, 2024

Israel’s deadly attacks on humanitarian workers in Gaza have led to the withdrawal of several humanitarian aid efforts, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. Following the Israeli airstrikes that killed seven workers from the World Central Kitchen (WCK), including six foreigners, several aid agencies announced the suspension of their operations in Gaza.

WCK and Anera, along with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced the cessation of their operations, citing security concerns as the reason for their decision. The killings have sparked international condemnation, and the founder of WCK, José Andrés, has called on Israel to cease indiscriminate killings and ease restrictions on humanitarian assistance.

The situation in Gaza is critical, with 2.2 million residents facing food insecurity, half of whom are suffering from hunger. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warns of impending hunger in northern Gaza in the coming months.

The impact of these suspensions is severe, as the delivery of aid from organizations like WCK has been crucial in providing essential supplies. With the interruption of WCK’s operations, the risk of hunger, particularly in northern Gaza, becomes more acute. Israel maintains that there are no restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza but accuses Gaza of deliberately limiting delivery.

WCK’s maritime route, established as an alternative route for aid, was seen as a promising option until the recent attack.

In response to the suspension of operations by humanitarian agencies, including WCK and Anera, the fate of aid delivery and the viability of the maritime route remain uncertain. While Cyprus has committed to maintaining its commitment to aid, the withdrawal of key actors like WCK and possible resistance from others raise doubts about their effectiveness in the future. Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the primary aid agency in Gaza, remains restricted by Israeli actions. The United Nations has called on Israeli authorities to lift these restrictions, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian efforts in the region.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens in Gaza, with aid efforts hindered by recent events, the international community faces increasing pressure to address the situation and ensure the delivery of vital assistance to those in need.
