The iconic flame for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been ignited at the historic birthplace of the ancient Olympics in Olympia. Symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Games, this flame embarks on a ceremonial relay, culminating in the lighting of the cauldron at the Summer Games’ opening in July.

In a meticulously choreographed event, reminiscent of ancient Greek traditions, actresses adorned as priestesses led the head priestess to the Temple of Hera, where, invoking Apollo, the god of light, the flame was lit using a parabolic mirror and the sun’s rays. This ritual, with its rich symbolism, echoes back to the inaugural torch relay established for the 1936 Berlin Games.

From Olympia, the flame commences its journey through Greece, spanning over 5,000 kilometers in 11 days, with over 600 torchbearers, ranging from elite athletes to members of the public, expected to participate. The relay’s Greek leg concludes at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896, where the flame is ceremonially passed to the Paris organizers.

Embarking on a historic voyage, the flame travels to Marseille aboard the Belem, a venerable three-masted vessel with a storied past. Over the years, Olympic relays have seen adventurous journeys, from circumnavigating the globe to venturing into space and scaling Everest.

Upon reaching France on May 8, the relay continues across 50 towns and cities, with the torch exchanged among 10,000 torchbearers. The flame’s ultimate destination is the Olympic cauldron in Paris, where it will burn brightly throughout the Games until the Closing Ceremony two weeks later. Additionally, it will illuminate the Paralympic Games, where 1,000 torchbearers will carry it across France.

Amid preparations for the grand spectacle, France has announced plans for an Opening Ceremony unlike any before, with a parade of approximately 10,500 athletes through the heart of Paris along the Seine River. However, due to security concerns, attendance at the ceremony will be halved, with President Emmanuel Macron hinting at a potential relocation to a stadium setting as a contingency.

Reflecting on the Games’ historical significance, Macron reiterated the importance of promoting the ideals of the Olympic Truce, a tradition dating back to ancient Greece.
