Aruba Catches a Glimpse of the Great American Eclipse

by | Apr 8, 2024

While Aruba won’t experience the full majesty of today’s total solar eclipse, aptly named the “Great American Eclipse,” residents will still be able to witness a partial covering of the sun. The eclipse began at 2:46 pm AST and will conclude by 3:20 pm, offering a brief glimpse of the lunar spectacle.

For those in North America lucky enough to be in the path of totality, the moon will completely obscure the sun for up to 4 minutes and 26 seconds, plunging the landscape into an eerie twilight. This marks the first total solar eclipse visible in North America since 2017, with the next one not gracing our skies until 2044.

Aruba Weather Watch confirmed via Facebook that Aruba will only experience a partial eclipse. However, some residents with a keen interest in the phenomenon have reportedly traveled to the United States to witness the total eclipse firsthand, with some even planning to live stream the event for those back home. Even in areas predicted to have a clear view of the eclipse, passing clouds could mar the experience. Luckily, for those unable to travel or potentially thwarted by local weather, NASA is providing a live stream of the eclipse, ensuring everyone has a chance to witness this awe-inspiring astronomical event.

Catching a Glimpse in Aruba:

Arubans hoping to catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse can do so safely with proper eye protection. Regular sunglasses are absolutely not sufficient. Look for eclipse glasses certified ISO 12312-2, which are specifically designed to filter out harmful solar rays. These glasses can be found online or at some astronomy stores.

Preparing for Totality:

For those fortunate enough to be in the path of totality, additional preparations can enhance the experience. A folding chair or blanket provides a comfortable viewing platform. Since totality can cause a brief temperature drop, consider having a light jacket on hand. Most importantly, be prepared to be amazed by this rare celestial event!
