Rome, Italy – April 9, 2024 – Italian authorities apprehended a suspected Islamic State (IS) militant on Monday after he arrived in Rome on a flight from Eindhoven Airport in the Netherlands.
The suspect, identified only by his initials S.I. and Tajikistani citizenship, was flagged by an international arrest warrant upon landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport. Authorities reported that S.I. was born in 1992 and possessed a history of using multiple false identities, including those from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine.
According to Italian police, S.I. is believed to be an active member of ISIS. The warrant reportedly states his involvement with the terrorist organization, though details on which country issued it and the specific charges remain unclear.
The arrest comes amidst heightened global security concerns following last month’s deadly IS attack on a Moscow concert hall that claimed over 140 lives. While Italian authorities haven’t linked S.I. to the Moscow attack, Russian authorities have arrested several Tajikistani suspects in connection with the massacre.
A critical aspect of the case involves how S.I., despite the warrant, managed to travel undetected from Eindhoven to Rome. Dutch authorities are likely to face scrutiny over potential security lapses that allowed a suspected terrorist to slip through airport security.
Further investigations aim to determine the issuing country of the warrant, the extent of S.I.’s alleged involvement with ISIS, and any connections to recent terror attacks.
