Ajax Crushed 6-0 by Feyenoord in Record Eredivisie Defeat

by | Apr 8, 2024

Amsterdam giants Ajax endured a nightmare result on Sunday, slumping to a record 6-0 defeat against arch-rivals Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. The dominant performance by the reigning champions Feyenoord marks a new low for Ajax’s turbulent season.

Feyenoord completely outplayed their opponents, peppering Ajax’s goal with 30 shots compared to just one from the dejected visitors. This dominance translated into three goals in each half, securing a famous victory in the Dutch Klassieker.

This loss marks a historic low for Ajax. It’s the first time they’ve ever been defeated by a six-goal margin in a competitive match. The result leaves them languishing in sixth place, a staggering 15 points behind the top three and effectively ending their Champions League hopes for the season with five games remaining.

Feyenoord’s wingers, Igor Paixao and Yankuba Minteh, were particularly impressive, each scoring twice. Minteh opened the scoring in the 34th minute, followed quickly by Paixao. Center-back David Hancko then cemented Feyenoord’s control with a goal before halftime.

The second half offered no respite for Ajax. Within a ten-minute window after the 66th minute, Feyenoord piled on the misery with three more goals from Minteh, Quinten Timber, and Paixao. Notably, England midfielder Jordan Henderson was absent for Ajax during this crushing defeat.

While Feyenoord were denied a seventh goal due to offside, the 6-0 victory stands as a record margin of victory against their biggest rivals, surpassing their previous 9-4 win in 1964.

This heavy loss adds to Ajax’s woes. They made the worst start in club history to a Dutch top-flight season and have already faced fan frustration, including crowd trouble during a 4-0 home defeat to Feyenoord back in September. To make matters worse, the club recently suspended chairman Alex Kroes on suspicion of insider trading.
