LACK OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IS DRIVING THE COMMUNITY CRAZY

by | Mar 15, 2024

Within a few days, Minister of Environment Ursell Arends will announce another moment for the public to dispose of household waste in one or more containers provided and paid for by the government, thereby alleviating the household waste crisis that exists in every neighborhood around Aruba.

Even this plan by the government has not yielded positive results, just like their decision to close the dump at Parkietenbos without an appropriate solution that the public could accept. It’s increasingly evident that the public has had enough of this issue; they no longer care what the minister does or promises, and many have decided to deal with their household waste in their own way, which often isn’t ideal either.

To stay in the center of Oranjestad alone, one can find numerous spots where people discard household waste, among other things, in the Eagle neighborhood, where strangers are seen throwing bags of household waste out of their cars, leaving them in front of residential buildings, creating a very unpleasant sight. Apart from such unacceptable and condemnable actions, it must be pointed out that this behavior stems from a lack of government management and the minister responsible for presenting something that the public can live with and bear the financial burden of.

At Klip, near the bridge and the ponds, irresponsible individuals have started throwing bags of household waste where supposedly these bags would fall into the water and disappear from sight, but most just end up on the rocks by the side.

The situation has become chaotic and indicates that it will become even more serious, with the most worrying aspect being that during a season when Aruba receives many cruise ships with hundreds of visitors, they are greeted with a downtown Oranjestad that in certain areas resembles a “pigsty.”
