Shares of the US company Planet Fitness plummeted this week after canceling the membership of a client who complained about the presence of a transgender woman in the women’s locker room at the gym she attended in Alaska, whom she photographed while shaving.
According to a report from the New York Post, Planet Fitness shares were priced at $66.92 on March 7 and dropped to $56.46 by March 19. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that the company’s valuation fell from $5.3 billion on March 14 to $4.9 billion on March 19.
Earlier, the involved client, Patricia Silva, posted a video in which she recounted seeing “a man shaving in the women’s locker room,” stating that she felt offended and photographed the individual who claimed to be a ‘queer’ person. According to her account, a minor around 12 years old, wrapped in a towel, was also in the locker room and appeared “a little scared.”
After Silva reported the incident to the gym’s management, her membership was canceled. The fitness center explained that the client violated the center’s rules by taking a photo of another visitor in the gym’s locker room.
“Discomfort is not a reason to deny access to transgender individuals”
The gym emphasized that its non-discrimination policy allows chain customers to “use facilities that best fit their sincerely held and self-identified gender identity.”
In another statement, circulated by the Daily Mail, Planet Fitness acknowledged that certain users may feel uncomfortable sharing some areas of the center with transgender individuals, but they believe that “this discomfort is not a reason to deny access to the transgender member.”
