Dodgers’ Ohtani Denies Gambling, Says Interpreter Stole Millions

by | Mar 26, 2024

Los Angeles (AP) – Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani held a press conference today to address allegations surrounding his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani vehemently denied ever participating in sports gambling and claimed Mizuhara stole millions of dollars from him.

“I never bet on baseball or any other sports, nor have I ever asked someone to do it on my behalf,” Ohtani said through a new interpreter. “This has been a very difficult situation, and I appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight.”

The controversy erupted last week when reports surfaced alleging Mizuhara had embezzled funds from Ohtani’s accounts, potentially connected to an illegal bookmaker. The Dodgers promptly fired Mizuhara following the accusations.

Ohtani, the reigning American League MVP, signed a record-breaking $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December. During the press conference, Ohtani did not elaborate on how Mizuhara may have stolen the money. However, he reiterated his complete innocence regarding any gambling activity.

“I am deeply disappointed by this betrayal,” Ohtani said. “Ippei was a trusted friend, and it is hurtful to learn that he would steal from me.”

Major League Baseball is likely to investigate the matter further. The Los Angeles Police Department may also be involved depending on the details of the alleged theft.
