Dengue Cases on the Rise in Aruba: Public Health Officials Urge Vigilance

by | Mar 23, 2024

In recent weeks, Aruba has been grappling with a concerning uptick in suspected cases of Dengue fever, prompting urgent calls from public health authorities for heightened vigilance and preventive measures across the island.

The Epidemiology and Investigation Section of the Department of Public Health has reported a noticeable increase in suspicious Dengue cases based on data collected from a new surveillance system. This system monitors symptoms reported by healthcare professionals and confirms positive cases through laboratory testing. While Aruba has been experiencing a dry season with minimal rainfall, the presence of breeding grounds for mosquitoes around residential areas has been identified as a significant contributing factor.

Public health officials have underscored the importance of community action in curbing the transmission of the Dengue virus. They emphasize the need to eliminate stagnant water sources, which serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, by removing or storing all objects that can collect water. This includes tires, containers, and other receptacles found around homes, schools, and workplaces.

Moreover, residents are urged to protect themselves and their families from Dengue by wearing long-sleeved clothing and applying mosquito repellent during peak mosquito activity hours, particularly in the late afternoon and evening. Additional measures such as using mosquito coils or insecticides, closing doors and windows, and avoiding outdoor areas where mosquitoes are prevalent have been recommended.

Recognizing the importance of early detection and prompt medical attention, healthcare providers advise individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, joint pain, eye pain, or rash to seek medical evaluation promptly. It is crucial to inform healthcare professionals of the onset of symptoms to facilitate appropriate laboratory testing and diagnosis.

In light of the evolving situation, public health officials assure the public that efforts are underway to provide updated information and support. Plans are in place for further dissemination of information through various channels, including social media, official websites, and direct communication channels.

As the community mobilizes to address the rising Dengue cases, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and proactive in implementing preventive measures. By working together and taking decisive action, Aruba aims to mitigate the spread of Dengue and safeguard the health and well-being of its residents.

For the latest updates and additional information on Dengue prevention and management, residents are encouraged to visit the Department of Public Health’s official website, follow their social media channels, or contact them directly via phone or email.
