Baldwin Seeks Dismissal of Charges in “Rust” Shooting, Citing Prosecutorial Misconduct

by | Mar 15, 2024

Santa Fe, NM – March 14, 2024 – Actor Alec Baldwin filed a motion to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter charges against him in the 2021 on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film “Rust.” This recent development follows the dismissal of the initial charges in April 2023 due to new evidence and the need for further investigation.

Moving Forward:

  • The judge assigned to the case will decide on the validity of the dismissal request.
  • The ongoing investigation aims to gather further evidence.

Baldwin’s legal team alleges prosecutorial misconduct and claims the charges are politically motivated. The motion accuses the initial District Attorney and Special Prosecutor of exploiting the tragedy “to advance their personal interests.”

This request comes amidst the ongoing legal proceedings. In February 2024, a jury found the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a separate trial. She is due for sentencing in April and faces a potential sentence of 18 months in prison.

While motions to dismiss charges are common, judges seldom grant them. Baldwin maintains his innocence, asserting he was unaware of live ammunition being present in the gun.
