Another Flight of U.S. Citizens Evacuated from Haiti Amidst Rising Gang Violence

by | Mar 28, 2024

ORLANDO, Fla. – A second plane carrying U.S. citizens fleeing Haiti landed safely at Orlando International Airport on March 27th, 2024. This follows an initial evacuation effort by the Florida government and highlights the worsening situation in the Caribbean nation.

The latest flight brought dozens of Americans home, including many young children. This comes after a surge in gang violence has gripped Haiti, creating a dangerous environment for many residents. Reports depict a near-war-zone atmosphere, with gang activity disrupting daily life and threatening public safety.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis authorized the chartering of these flights to assist U.S. citizens seeking to escape the violence. While the exact number of Americans seeking evacuation remains unclear, news reports suggest hundreds have registered for assistance.

The U.S. State Department is also involved in evacuation efforts, coordinating flights from the Dominican Republic for U.S. citizens who can reach there from Haiti.

Haiti, unfortunately, has a long history of political instability and economic hardship. These factors have contributed to the rise of powerful gang groups who control swaths of territory and engage in violence and extortion.

The international community has expressed concern about the deteriorating situation in Haiti and continues to urge a peaceful resolution. However, for many U.S. citizens, the immediate priority is escaping the violence and finding safety.

These evacuation flights offer a lifeline to those caught in the crossfire, but they don’t address the root causes of the crisis in Haiti. The path forward for Haiti likely involves continued international cooperation and a long-term plan to address the underlying issues plaguing the nation.
