Russian Forces Poised to Advance as Ukrainian Troops Withdraw from Avdiivka

by | Feb 20, 2024

As Ukrainian forces withdraw from the key eastern town of Avdiivka, a Ukrainian commander stationed on the outskirts issues a stark warning: Russia shows no signs of halting its advance and is poised to extend its reach deeper into the region.

Deputy commander Maksym Zhorin of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, communicating via Telegram, emphasizes the ongoing threat posed by Russian forces within Avdiivka. Zhorin’s assessment underscores the belief among Ukrainian troops that Russia possesses both the capability and intent to continue its offensive in the area, with indications of movements toward Lastochkyne.

Despite Ukrainian troops’ establishment of defensive lines around Avdiivka, the intensity of the conflict remains high. Zhorin acknowledges the ferocity of the fighting but notes a relative decrease in comparison to the battles within the town itself.

This withdrawal comes after Ukrainian forces made the decision over the weekend to abandon Avdiivka, handing Russia a significant victory—the most substantial since the capture of Bakhmut last year.

However, criticism looms over the delayed delivery of essential ammunition. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba contends that timely supplies could have altered the outcome, underscoring the human cost of political indecision amidst the relentless conflict.

Kuleba acknowledges the sacrifice of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines and laments the toll of prolonged debates on military strategy. He warns that Russia remains steadfast in its aggression, signaling the likelihood of continued hostilities.

As tensions escalate and the humanitarian crisis deepens, international efforts to mediate a ceasefire or peace agreement remain imperative. The conflict’s evolving nature necessitates vigilance and a nuanced understanding of diverse perspectives to navigate toward a sustainable resolution.
