The Pokémon Company has confirmed their upcoming mobile card game, “Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket,” will not feature Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). This decision comes amidst a growing trend of video game companies exploring, and sometimes shying away from, NFT integration.
While no official reason was given, analysts speculate The Pokémon Company might be prioritizing accessibility and avoiding potential environmental or legal concerns associated with NFTs. Instead, the game will rely on traditional free-to-play monetization with in-app purchases likely focused on acquiring card packs or cosmetic upgrades.
Pocket aims to offer a streamlined and accessible experience for both veteran TCG players and newcomers. Players can collect digital versions of classic cards and brand new ones exclusive to the app. Two free booster packs will be available daily, allowing players to build their collection without solely relying on in-app purchases. The app also boasts a “streamlined” version of the traditional TCG battle system, making it faster and easier to learn.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature is “immersive cards,” which offer unique visual experiences that transport players into the world of the card’s illustration. This innovative feature adds a new layer of engagement for players of all ages.
Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is expected to launch on iOS and Android devices sometime in 2024, offering a fresh take on the popular franchise while focusing on accessibility and innovative features that cater to both long-time fans and potential newcomers.
