Nasser Medical Complex, Gaza’s Largest Hospital, Ravaged by Israeli Raid

by | Feb 18, 2024

The Nasser Medical Complex, formerly the largest functioning hospital in the Gaza Strip, now lies in ruins following a devastating raid by Israeli forces over the past several days. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed the facility’s closure on Sunday, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

Reports indicate that around 200 patients remain stranded within the complex, with WHO teams being denied access on Friday and Saturday. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgent need to transfer at least 20 patients to other hospitals for critical medical treatment, underscoring the life-threatening consequences of the hospital’s closure.

The situation worsened with Israeli forces arresting approximately 70 healthcare workers at Nasser Hospital, further crippling the already strained healthcare system. Dr. Ashraf Al-Qidra, spokesperson for the Gaza Ministry of Health, revealed that 80 patients were forcibly transferred to an undisclosed location, leaving only 25 medical staff members to manage the remaining cases, most of which require urgent attention.

Tragically, the assault on Gaza extended beyond the medical facility, with Israeli airstrikes claiming numerous civilian lives in central Gaza. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported at least 68 casualties, including innocent children and infants. The harrowing scenes of injured civilians inundating overwhelmed hospitals paint a grim picture of the indiscriminate violence ravaging the region.

As tensions escalate, the prospect of a ground offensive looms, particularly in the southern city of Rafah, which has borne the brunt of relentless airstrikes. Dr. Marwan Al-Homss of Abu Yousuf Al-Najjar Government Hospital confirmed the deaths of at least 13 Palestinians in Rafah, underscoring the urgency of international intervention to halt the escalating bloodshed.

Amidst the chaos, efforts to broker a ceasefire face significant obstacles. The United States has threatened to veto a proposed resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, signaling ongoing diplomatic challenges in resolving the conflict. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains steadfast in rejecting international dictates, insisting on direct negotiations without preconditions.

As the toll of civilian casualties rises and humanitarian aid remains obstructed, the international community faces mounting pressure to act decisively to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of this protracted conflict.
