Messi Magic Ignites MLS as Inter Miami Opens Season with Victory

by | Feb 22, 2024

Lionel Messi’s dazzling skills lit up the opening game of the MLS season as Inter Miami secured a 2-0 victory against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday. The Argentine maestro showcased his trademark creativity, chipping the ball over an injured opponent while attempting a shot, just one of many moments of brilliance throughout the night.

“I saw [Messi] playing free on the field,” said Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, praising his star player. “He has a characteristic that no other player has. He grabs the ball very far from the rival goal and the feeling he gives is that he will generate something [that] will end in a goal situation.”

Messi’s impact extends beyond the pitch. His arrival has coincided with a surge in interest in Major League Soccer. MLS Season Pass subscriptions doubled following his signing, and Leagues Cup matches featuring Messi drew higher viewership than the league’s typical postseason averages. Ticket prices have also skyrocketed for games featuring the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, highlighting the increased fan engagement he brings.

While Messi’s individual brilliance is undeniable, experts caution against attributing MLS’s growth solely to his presence. Long-term success hinges on sustained development across the league, including infrastructure improvements, player development initiatives, and maintaining a competitive playing field. Additionally, while viewership is rising, MLS still lags behind established American sports leagues in overall popularity.

Nevertheless, Messi’s arrival serves as a significant catalyst for the league. His star power has generated a wave of excitement, attracting new fans, particularly among younger demographics, and propelling MLS into the global spotlight. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if this initial surge in interest translates into long-term growth for Major League Soccer.
