Lights, Camera, Action! Marathon Super Video: Aruba’s Blockbuster Lives In Nostalgia

by | Feb 21, 2024

Lights flicker, popcorn crackles, and the excitement builds as eager movie enthusiasts roam the aisles of Marathon Super Video, Aruba’s very own Blockbuster. Ah, the memories! It’s a trip down memory lane, where renting VHS videos was a cherished tradition, and Friday nights were reserved for cinematic adventures.

Fast forward to January 9, 2010, a day etched in the annals of Aruba’s entertainment history. Marathon Super Video, akin to its iconic counterpart Blockbuster, bid farewell to its loyal patrons. The era of VHS tapes seemed to fade into oblivion, as DVDs and streaming services took center stage. But oh, what a ride it was!

For 34 glorious years, Marathon Super Video reigned supreme, offering an unparalleled selection of movies, from Hollywood blockbusters to cult classics. The anticipation of discovering the latest releases, the thrill of browsing through endless rows of tapes, each holding the promise of an unforgettable viewing experience – it was pure magic.

But let’s not forget the rituals that accompanied the rental process. Who could resist the temptation of snagging a bag of buttery popcorn or indulging in a tub of sweet treats while perusing the shelves? And who can forget the excitement of racing home, eager to pop that prized VHS tape into the VCR and embark on a cinematic journey?

As news of Marathon Super Video’s closure spread, an outpouring of nostalgia swept across the island. Memories were shared, stories were recounted, and a sense of wistfulness enveloped the community. For many, Marathon Super Video wasn’t just a rental store – it was a beloved institution, a gathering place where friendships were forged and movie magic was celebrated.

But sadly, despite our search for visual mementos, we couldn’t find any pictures of Marathon Super Video. However, we stumbled upon a nostalgic gem – a picture of a Digicel Flex Card featuring a promotional offer for Marathon Super Video.

And as the curtain fell on Marathon Super Video, another chapter began. The place where PBS (or as some locals call it, Xerox Aruba) is now located was once one of the cherished homes of Marathon Super Video for more than 30 years. Though the shelves may be empty and the lights dimmed, the spirit of Marathon Super Video lives on in our hearts. Until we meet again, lights, camera, action – the show must go on!
