Aruba Customs Department and ATIA Collaborate to Enhance Trader Relations

by | Feb 15, 2024

In a bid to foster stronger ties between traders and the Customs Management Team, the Aruba Customs Department has joined hands with the Aruba Trade & Industry Association (ATIA) to reintroduce a successful initiative called “Optimization of Relationship.”

The inaugural session, held in a packed room, marked the revival of a concept first introduced two decades ago, demonstrating a commitment to promoting dialogue and understanding between stakeholders. The initiative offers traders an open platform to engage with Customs officials, seek information, and pose specific queries without obligation.

Addressing a diverse audience, the session covered crucial topics including the role and responsibilities of Customs, updates on the forthcoming importation law (“Algemene Landsverordering Douane en Accijnzen – ALDA”), and the accurate calculation of “Customs Value.” Participants also delved into practical matters such as the process for obtaining refunds and the nuances of declaring goods, with particular focus on scenarios involving discounts obtained through various channels.

Following a comprehensive presentation by Customs Director Mr. Ricky Croes, attendees seized the opportunity to pose questions, sparking discussions on a range of subjects pertinent to their businesses. Notable points of interest included strategies for handling defective or expired products, insights into air cargo procedures, and clarifications on determining “Customs Value” in specific contexts.

Of particular intrigue was the revelation that Customs is actively investigating the treatment of coupons on platforms like Amazon, hinting at potential changes in regulations or procedures.

Looking ahead, ATIA announced plans to ensure continued engagement by disseminating session reminders through its social media channels, urging interested parties to follow for updates on forthcoming sessions and courses scheduled for 2024.

The collaborative efforts between the Aruba Customs Department and ATIA underscore a commitment to transparency, communication, and partnership, with the aim of streamlining processes and facilitating smoother transactions for traders across the region.
